Position Summary: The Director of Athletics reports to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer while also having direct access to the President of the University. The Director of Athletics serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet, and is responsible for the day-to-day management of and long-range planning for an NCAA Division I athletics program that sponsors seventeen (17) varsity sports and serves approximately 400 student-athletes. The University is committed to an intercollegiate athletics program that operates with the highest integrity and is focused on the total development of its student-athletes. Richmond teams compete in the Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association (football), the Southern Conference (men’s lacrosse) and the Patriot League (women’s golf) and have won 59 league championships since 2000 as well as the NCAA Division I FCS Championship in 2008.
The Director of Athletics is responsible for advancing a competitive program within the context of the University’s primary mission of educational excellence and ensuring an excellent student experience. The Director is responsible for managing and conducting an athletics program that adheres to all federal and state laws, including Title IX and NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations. The Director ensures that head coaches recruit academically qualified students and support student-athletes in achieving their academic and personal goals, including graduation.
The Director oversees the hiring and retention of, as well as the terms and conditions of employment for, head coaches; supervises head coaches and promotes their professional development. The Director promotes diversity in hiring administrative staff and coaches and in recruiting student-athletes creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness and respect.
The Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining the budgets of a well-resourced program, practicing fiscal discipline, enhancing revenue streams, and overseeing Athletics facilities in collaboration with the University Facilities Department.
The Director provides leadership and innovation in fundraising and revenue development, collaborating with the Office of Advancement to identify funding priorities and successfully execute fundraising strategies.
The Director represents the University and the Athletics Department to internal and external audiences, promoting the program in ways that reflect well on the University and foster a spirit of engagement among student-athletes and coaches. The Director provides leadership within the University, in the community, and nationally, serving on committees, working effectively and collegially with partners across campus, interacting positively with alumni and friends of the University, and serving as a spokesperson on athletics issues with the news media.
