The Duke Club at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for a Director of Major Gifts for Athletics. The Duke Club is the fundraising vehicle for JMU Athletics raising contributions in support of student-athlete scholarships, the general operating budget and capital improvements. The Director of Major Gifts will be responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting individuals (alumni, former student-athletes, parents and friends of the university) for major gifts and leadership-level annual fund contributions. The ideal candidate will be a motivated individual looking for an opportunity to excel in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should be extremely driven and have passion for raising funds while working with various constituents.
The Director of Major Gifts will manage a portfolio of prospects capable of making commitments of $25,000 or more and be responsible for 150+ visits (face-to-face scheduled meetings) each year. This includes qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospective donors, along with setting and enacting strategies for major gifts. This position will have an annual goal of 20+ solicitations of at least $25,000. Performance will be measured by face-to-face visits, activity that advances the gift solicitation and dollars raised. In addition to fundraising responsibilities, this position will also provide leadership in all capital project campaigns, naming rights opportunities and manage the Duke Club Circle of Champions donor society (individuals who have made commitments of $100,000+ to athletic capital projects). This position will also serve as a fundraising liaison for multiple athletic teams with assignment of those teams to be determined post hiring.
The position will need to complete detailed and timely reports on each donor contact, as well as maintain pipeline tracking documents. Candidate must be focused on collaborative efforts with JMU Advancement Officers and University Partners. Overnight travel within the state of Virginia, regionally and nationally will be required with this position. Attendance at games, athletic department events and university functions are also measures of the job. This position will report to the Assistant Athletic Director for Development and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in higher education athletic fundraising.
- Proven ability to solicit and close major gifts ($25,000+).
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings/weekends, along with the ability to travel.
- Strong verbal, written communication and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to diverse constituencies.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a background in college athletic fundraising.
