Description The Chief Business Officer (CBO) is responsible for the financial and business operations of a $70 million operating unit including daily business processes, financial reporting and planning, and long-range operating and capital budgets. In order to carry out these wide-ranging activities, the CBO directly manages staff interfaces with a wide spectrum of partners across the institution, including regular interactions with senior-level faculty and administrators and with central service functions.
The CBO manages wide-ranging responsibilities that advance the university's mission. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Serve as the primary business advisor to the unit and as the financial liaison to the university; • Apply a sophisticated understanding of the economic forces shaping higher education to develop the unit's financial activities including financial strategy, planning, projections, and budgets that focus on attaining and sustaining long-term financial equilibrium; • Develop models that respond to new financial or operational circumstances and provide insightful analysis of financial results and forecasts that allow for informed decision-making and resource optimization; • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing business and administrative professionals; • Inspire collaboration; • Produce, organize, and present information to succinctly and effectively "tell the unit's story;" • Advocate for management practices that support strong and effective internal controls for fiscal and compliance activities; • Serve as an ambassador for the unit on various university committees; and • Provide a service orientation with high standards of performance.
The successful candidate will have an established record of exceptional demonstrated leadership and of establishing and maintaining productive, collaborative relationships in a complex, distributed organization. A strong foundation in finance coupled with outstanding, proactive communication is necessary for success in this role. A demonstrated desire and passion for providing excellent customer service and for building trust and confidence must be proven.
Preferred Skills and Experiences:
• At least five years of experience, including operational leadership responsibilities, in a comparably complex environment. Experience in a school setting is preferred but not required. • Strong evidence of significant business acumen, notably capacity in planning and analysis, and process redesign, along with a proven track record of successfully overseeing innovative business plans, profit and loss statements, and other financial reporting. • Demonstrated leadership, collaboration, service-orientation, and initiative. • Proven ability to relate well to, and work effectively with, people from all backgrounds. • A proven passion for educating students and helping them develop into mature adults. • Successful track record of driving and adapting to change in a multidisciplinary academic setting. • An ability to quickly synthesize and effectively respond to large amounts of complexity and data in a day-to-day operational context to guide and support decision-making processes. • Exceptional writing, organizational, problem solving, technical analysis and teambuilding skills. • Demonstrated maturity, creativity, and change-management skills coupled with a commitment to personal and professional growth through ongoing educational activities, as well as a demonstrated commitment to mentorship of staff. • Energy, agility, drive, and a demonstrated commitment to the academic mission of Vanderbilt University.
