The Sports Performance Coach/Fitness Room Coordinator in the Department of Athletics and Campus Recreation is responsible for developing and implementing high-level strength and conditioning programs to meet the individual needs of St. Mary’s 11 varsity athletic teams. The strength and conditioning program should involve a regimen of exercises and drills to enhance power, strength, agility, speed and flexibility to improve performance and decrease injury potential. This position will coordinate the operations and management of the fitness areas at the Alumni Athletics & Convocation Center (AA&CC), as well as, two (2) additional Varsity weight facilities at The Park at St. Mary’s. Fitness areas include the group fitness studio and the multiple informal fitness areas in the AA&CC. This position will provide the day to day oversight and administration of the Fitness and Wellness programs, including coordinating group exercise programs, assisting University students, faculty and staff using the fitness facilities and participate in program marketing. This position will supervise one (1) Graduate Assistant Coach. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Program Management: •Manage the strength and conditioning facility, as well as, ensure high standards of maintenance and cleanliness. •Coordinate the scheduling of team workouts and campus fit room availability. •Ability to communicate and work in partnership with administration, coaching staff, and athletic training staff to provide an integrated program of injury prevention, rehabilitation, performance training and nutritional planning. •Collaborate with coaching staffs in an effort to assist with the performance and success of their program. •Support the development of each student-athlete spiritually, academically, physically and socially. •Maintaining compliance with NCAA, Heartland Conference, NSCA and St. Mary’s University rules, regulations and best practices. •Managing a comprehensive fitness/wellness program to include: fitness area operations, group exercise, personal training, and special event programming. Teaching proper and safe weight lifting techniques and motivating student-athletes to reach their potential. •Coordinate all fitness/wellness programming, personal trainers, and group fitness instructors. •Conduct staff meetings and trainings for the fitness attendants, group exercise instructors, and personal trainers. •Development of multiple fitness and wellness programs and challenges throughout the year. •Assist in personal training and group fitness instruction as an active trainer/instructor. •Assist in risk management including policy and procedure development and enforcement for the fitness areas. •Design a campaign to increase participation by the St. Mary’s community in fitness and wellness activities. •Maintain a welcoming environment, educating St. Mary’s community members on the use of the facilities, instruct on proper techniques and appropriate use of equipment. Administrative: •Supervise, mentor and evaluate one (1) Graduate Assistant Coach and student staff. •Assess effectiveness and satisfaction of programs, services and facilities. •Prepare regular written communication such as mid-year and annual reports to include financial and participation reports, and equipment inventory reports •Build strong partnerships on campus and with outside vendors. •Maintain updated facility and program staff manuals. •Attend all office, staff and department meetings as scheduled. •Other duties as required.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in areas of Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education or related field; Master’s degree in related fields preferred.
At least 1 year of demonstrated experience in fitness/ wellness programming, personal training and/or strength and conditioning, facility management, preferably in a university or scholastic setting.
Ability to work early morning, evening and weekends, as required.
Appropriate nationally recognized strength and conditioning, personal training and/or group fitness certification.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred. Required within 30 days of employment.
